Heather Petty at Barossa Village

About Heather Petty

Heather Petty, an Adelaide-based photographic artist, embarked on a transformative journey from a bustling professional career to pursue her dream of capturing the essence of abandoned homes. For the past seven years, Petty has returned to her birthplace on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula to document the beauty and memories within the decaying rubble of abandoned homes. Her lens captures poignant scenes of crystal glasses, comic books, and clothing spilling out of suitcases, revealing the passage of time and the stories embedded in forgotten spaces.

Heather Petty draws inspiration from the work of Canadian photographer David McMillan, renowned for documenting the growth and decay of Chernobyl over two decades. This influence is evident in Petty's first solo exhibition titled "Long Exposure Memory," where she showcases evocative photographs featuring the interiors of abandoned houses and a roadhouse near Wudinna.

Petty's lens not only captures the aesthetic allure of decay but also serves as a commentary on the changing landscape of rural areas. Reflecting on the decline since the 1950s, she observes the impact of larger farms, machinery, and a diminishing workforce. Through her lens, Petty communicates a narrative of resilience within these communities, shaped by challenges like the Millennium drought, which prompted a fundamental shift in farmers' approaches to agriculture.

Heather Petty's photography goes beyond mere documentation; it encapsulates the spirit of communities weathering storms, inviting viewers to contemplate the enduring strength found within the abandoned echoes of the past.
