About Dave Clarke

Sculpture

Dave Clarke has worked as a modeler and sculptor for Damien Hirst in the United Kingdom and was the Senior Prop Maker for Warner Brothers for ‘Mortal Combat’ in 2019. He has participated in many major exhibitions including the New Designers Exhibition in Islington London, the National Wine Centre Adelaide, ‘Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable’ (for Damien Hirst) in Venice Italy. Dave’s commissions include the London Aquarium Charity Sculpture installation, American River wharf and Nicholas Baudin commemorative sculpture in Kangaroo Island.

Dave’s uses a ‘lost wax’ process which is complex and involves many stages to create the shape and detail of his creature. This is then enhanced by the plating of copper in a solution over time and produces richness of colour, hues of verdigris and rich textured patina. His entry ‘Eat them to Beat Them’ in the 2020 Waterhouse exhibition uses both processes of lost wax (which involves setting the works alight to remove the wax) and electroformed copper and to our knowledge, Dave is the only artist using this intriguing combination.

Dave is a veteran finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize and has been selected 6 times. His work has been part of the travelling South Australian Museum exhibition to Canberra with his sculpture of an eagle ray which was highly commended by the judges.

For Dave, the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize makes you ‘up your game’ and that “nothing pushes you more than the Waterhouse, it brings out the best in your art practice, validates your work and allows increased visibility.”
